Dec 1999: Surnames: FUCHS, BURCH, DIEHL, STIRN, GROSSART, TOEPFER

Seeking any information on our grandmother, Anna Marie FUCHS, who married Enoch Arden BURCH in St. Louis, MO on 10/19/1886. Her Death Certificate for 9/31/1941 states that she was born in Belleville, IL on 6/4/1872, however, her parents are stated as unknown. Enoch and "Annie" lived most of their lives in Missouri, but died in Quincy, IL.

Our research has indicated that "Annie" was a daughter of Louis FUCHS and Caroline DIEHL FUCHS, however, a visit last week to Belleville indicates earlier research to be in error. I found:

1) Louis FUCHS -- b 10/27/1828 in Baden, Germany -- d 4/23/1895 in Belleville, IL -- md 12/6/1853 in Belleville

2) Caroline DIEHL -- b 1837 in Wurttemberg, Germany -- d 9/30/1890 in Belleville, IL

Children:

3) Louisa FUCHS -- b 1854 in Belleville, md Conrad STIRN on 8/19/1883 in Belleville, moved to NY

4) Gustavius F. FUCHS -- b 7/22/1856 in Belleville, d 2/21/1936 in Belleville

5) Frederick FUCHS -- b 1858 in Belleville, moved to Missouri

6) Charles FUCHS -- b 1862 in Belleville, moved to Missouri then California

7) Alfred Louis FUCHS -- b 1867 in Belleville, d 11/30/1904 in Belleville

8) Anna E. FUCHS -- b 1870 in Belleville, md Jacob F. Schmidt on 3/10/1893, moved to Texas

9) Meta Emily FUCHS -- b 6/18/1869 in Belleville, md Charles A. GROSSART on 9/9/1893, d 7/16/1903

Louis FUCHS' parents were Frederick and Louisa FUCHS, b 1801 and 1804 in Baden, Germany -- d in Belleville. Louis FUCHS had brothers, also in the Belleville area:

1) Charles FUCHS -- b in Germany, md Louise Loser on 5/31/1853 in St. Clair Co.

2) Gustave Emil FUCHS -- b 6/5/1838 in Germany, md Anna TOEPFER of St. Louis, d 2/8/1923 in St. Clair Twp.

3) Conrad FUCHS -- b 7/31/1848 in Germany is possibly another brother.

I have considerably more information regarding the FUCHS family, and am anxious to share information with anyone else researching this rather large family. As it appears that 8) above is not our grandmother, hopefully someone has knowledge which will reveal the Anna Marie FUCHS we're searching for. Please contact Arthur J. Burch

The brother's name was William "Willis" Elmer Davenport b. 1882, died 2/1972, and lived on East St. Louis Ave, St. Clair, Illinois at the time of his death. His wife's name was Myrtle (maiden name possibly Proctor), and she died 10/1973 at 62232 Caseyville Ave, St. Clair, Illinois. November 2002: Researching these early 1900 emigrant Bohemian family lines to St. Clair County, and am always willing to share. I would like to enrich their stories: VALTA/WALTA, LIDISKY/LIDICKY, KOUDELKA, PECHMAN/PECKMAN Karen Souhrada

November 2002: My father, Thomas Watt WALLACE, b. 1906 Hamilton, Scotland, emigrated through Ellis Island in 1908 with his mother, Jeanie (nee Smith), in order to join his father, William WALLACE who was working in a coal mine at Bens Creek, Myra, Cambria County, PA. The family is NOT included in the 1910 PA census, and I am trying to determine where they went after 1908.

A photo of my father taken at the age of approx. 12-17 years (1918-1923), was taken by the photographer's studio, "Majestic Photo Postal Studio", 240 Collinsville Ave., East St. Louis, Ills. I know this studio was operating during the 1920s. It is possible my father was living in the area at that time. Family hearsay indicates my father was orphaned at a very young age and was taken care of by relatives somewhere in the States. This photo would suggest that my father was living in the St. Clair area at that time. Any assistance will be very much appreciated, ie 1920 census, or ?. Pat Galovich Mission, B.C.

January 2003: MAURATH-HAUNSS
Seeking the Catholic birth/baptismal record of Denis HAUNSS or MAURATH c1840. Denis's father, Felix HAUNSS, changed his name to MAURATH. Denis might also be found as Thiebault Denis or Theobald Dyonis HAUNSS or MAURATH. His mother was Barbara JACOB, married Felix in St. Louis 21 May 1839 (no record found), and reportedly died in childbirth, or shortly thereafter. No death/burial record for Barbara can be found. Felix married Barbara's younger sister, Josephine JACOB, in 1844. Felix was from the Black Forest, Germany and Barbara "Barbe" and Josephine were from Lorraine, France.

Felix (aka Philip) and family lived in Ridge Prairie (O'Fallon) since the mid-1830's. Felix moved to St.Louis (Soulard) in 1841 and back to St.Clair County (to Millstadt) in 1864. Because of their German accents, the HAUNSS name has been mis-spelled as HAUNS, HAUNGS, HAENGS, HANGS, HANKS, HAUNTZ, HOUNTZ, etc. and MAURATH as MARAT, MERAT, MORAT, MOWERT, MOWRAT, MURAT, MYROT, etc. Any help would be appreciated. John MAURATH

January 2003: Seeking the burial place of Johanna SCHULER JACOB, wife of Jean Thiebault JACOB. After Jean died, Johanna came to America (Cincinnati, Ohio) with her children in the 1830's, and ended-up living with her daughter Josephine JACOB MAURATH, wife of Felix MAURATH. All moved to Ridge Prairie (now called O'Fallon), St.Clair County, Illinois in the mid-1830's; to St.Louis in 1841; to Millstadt area in 1864. She was not listed on the 1870 census with the family, and so probably died prior to that. She used her maiden name on records here in America, and the name had various spellings, SCHULER, SCHUELER, SCHULDER, etc. Her first name was also listed as Jeanne,Johanna, Hanna, Anna, etc. The family was Catholic, but St.James Catholic Church in Millstadt, claims they have no record of her death. Can't find a death or burial record for her anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions? Her son Anton JACOB moved to Carlyle, Clinton County, Illinois, and so it's possible that she died during a visit with him. A quick check showed no records there. Please contact John MAURATH

January 2003:ROOS-GORDON, Carmelitta Seeking the birth parents of my great-grandmother, but I don't know what name to use for her. We know that she was adopted by the Valentin ROOS family, who settled in Millstadt, St.Clair County, Illinois in the 1830's. We know also, that she said she did not like the ROOS family because they were not nice to her and treated her like an indentured servant (maybe she was?). They called her Carmelitta, Carmelite, Carrie, Kalomita, etc. She was born 01 June 1876 in New York City, died 1928 in St.Louis, Missouri and was buried in Millstadt. She is listed with the ROOS family on the 1880 census for Millstadt as Carolina LORAN (hard to read), 4 years old, adopted, out of New York City. Since the ROOS family had been in Millstadt for over 40 years, we assume that my great-grandmother came to the area on an orphan train. I believe I've exhausted every possible avenue of research (even hired researchers), trying to find her origins in New York and St.Clair County, Illinois, with no luck and no leads. Dead end - brick wall. On some records obtained from St.Clair County, her maiden name was sometimes listed as GORDON and sometimes as JORDAN. So, we have 3 different maiden names for her: LORAN, JORDAN, GORDON. She died young at age 52 (her husband Louis MAURATH lived to be 97). If anyone out there has any other suggestions or ideas for me, to help find her birth parents and place of birth, I'd really appreciate it, and would be ever so thankful! John MAURATH

January 2003: Looking for the parents of my gggg grandfather, JOSEPH CLERMONT, who was b. ca 1743 in Kaskaskia, Randolph Co., Il and d. 1772 in Cahokia, St. Clair Co., Il. The marriage records for Cahokia show that another Joseph Clermont married there in 1754 to Susanne Baron. Does anyone know if this Joseph is the father of Joseph b. 1743? Obviously Susanne Baron can not be Joseph’s (b. 1743) mother, so perhaps this is a second marriage for the senior Joseph Clermont. Thanks for your help. Stewart Monroe

Two (2) children were born to the MONTGOMERYs by 1860: John William, b August 10, 1853 and Martha, ca 1857. 1870 Census shows William and Matilda living in East St. Louis with son John MONTGOMERY; Martha does not appear and may have died; daughter Catherine Montgomery (b ca 1862); and son, Gustavus Thornton Montgomery (b April 4, 1867, my g-grandfather, reportedly b Missouri); all in the household of Amelia/Amalia THORNTON and her son John.

After 1870 I cannot find William or Matilda in any Census. Thats all the documentation I've been able to find. Family oral history claims that William was in Streator, LaSalle Co., Illinois as Marshal and Justice of the Peace. Unconfirmed. Any Help will be greatly appreciated! Joyce Uselton

Aug 2007: Seek naturalization for Lawrence DALY/ DAILY. A man by this name appears on the 1840 US Census, St Clair, Illinois, pg. 152 per Ancestry.com. He fits the profile of my Great-grandfather who was Roman Catholic. He first appears on the 1850 Cenusus of Pittsfield, Lorain, OH, where he married his brother's widow, Ann Marie, and raised his nephew James Renselaer Daly. His brother James died in 1843. I know Lawrence used to sing in a church choir in Joliet, Illinois, the area from which his second wife, my Great-grandmother, came. But the church records for the period I seek, have also burned. My GreatGM was Mary Egan, 1836 Ireland, to US in 1851, to 1920 OH. I couldn't seem to find a marriage record for them in Illinois, although they got together in about 1862. Info follows from 1900 US Census, OH:
*Lawrence DALY, born ca.1812, Ireland. Possibly Cork, Cork, IRE, came to US 1830, here for 70 years. Naturalized*
Lawrence lived in Ohio until 1905, when he died at the ripe old age of 93. Any help is appreciated, whether on a volunteer basis or for fee. Thank you, Patricia

March 2019: Joseph Beger, aka Baker, Baecker, Becker, born 2 Sep 1845 IL (though listed as Saxony, Germany on one census); died 20 Jan 1911, Belleville IL; wagonmaker, blacksmith. Mother was Wilhelmine aka Minnie, Maria or Mena, died 7 Mar 1893, buried Walnut Hill Cemetery, Belleville IL under Minnie Hoffmann; remarried 1851 Erhardt Hoffman using name of Marie Becker. One known daughter by first marriage to ___ Beger, Wilhelmina ‘Minnie’ Beger (Becker written as maiden name when married), known to be sister of Joseph Beger, married Friederich Kraft. Seeking information on father of Joseph who would have died somewhere between 1845 and 1850, most likely immigrated to US 1844-46. Possible father, Kathardt Baker who died Jul 1848 St. Clair County IL of cholera.

June 2011: Looking for any information on Arthur William St. Clair. Understand he ran for Mayor in O'Fallon against Max Machnik and Arthur won. Arthur St. Clair was my great grandfather and Max Machnik was my greatuncle, I have no information on Max.

June 2011: Jan 2011: My great-grandparents, Thomas and Rosa Smith O'BRIEN were killed in the Great Cyclone that hit the St. Louis area in May of 1896. The St. Louis Globe-Democrat lists "Thomas O'Brien -- supposed" as one killed in East St. Louis. He was a railroad engineer, and may have been in the railroad yards there. Seven children were left orphaned: William, Mabel, Charles, Thomas, Grover, Joseph, and little Frances, who was adopted and known as Margaret Chandler. I have hired two researchers and exhausted every lead in St. Louis, finding NO records whatever of this family after the 1880 census. I have now found Rosa buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in June 1896, but still nothing for Thomas. I would greatly appreciate any help if they might possibly have been in East St. Louis by 1896. Can anyone give me any ideas? There should surely be guardian papers for all these children, but there are none in St. Louis. Thanks for any clues you might provide.

Mar 2011: Looking for family or records of George W. Combs and wife Carrie N. Baker Combs. This couple was married in 1906 in Jackson County, Illinois. Carrie was the sister of Minnie Baker Youngman. Have traced this family through to 1930 census of St. Clair County at which time George was 48, Carrie 43, with three children Dorothy 13, Alberta 7, and Virginia 3. In previous census records other older children were listed but by 1930 had either passed, left home or married. If anyone has any information please contact me at Grace Knowles, Darby, Montana. Thank you so much.

Mar 2011: Trying to find grandparents Charles Rouge and Elizabeth (Perrin or Parrin or Parron) Rouge after 1910 including burial dates. Elizabeth was born about 1882 or earlier and reportedly died about age 38. This couple lived East St. Louis and Belleville between 1870 to 1920. Charles Leo Rouge (born 1900) and his sister, Lilly Maria (born 1897) were their children. They were placed into St. John's Catholic orphanage in Belleville, Illinois when Elizabeth became ill. I have the 1910 Census record which shows Charles Leo and Lilly Maria at ages 9 and 12 in the orphanage and need no further information on them. Yes, I am subscribed to FamilySearch.org and have searched these and other sources extensively for Rouge and Perrin. Any leads or references are appreciated. Sincerely, Robert A. Rouge

Mar 2011: Would like the burial place and death dates and or obituaries for the following. My great aunt Lillie Larsen Minder who was born in 1895 DesMoines, Iowa. Her family moved to Percy, Illinois after Lillie's mother died about 1909. Lillie married Benjamin Peter Minder in 1913 and in 1920 and resided in Collinsville, Illinois. By 1930 the Minder family was in East St. Louis, Illinois. Lillie was still there in 1947 per her brother's WWII draft card. No further information after that.
