COUNTY FORMATION

St. Clair County was created in 1790, from the western half of Knox County, when it was a part of the Northwest Territory. It was named in honor of General Arthur St. Clair, who was the first Governor and Commander in-Chief over this territory.

The boundaries changed often. In 1795, St. Clair lost its southern portion to the creation of Randolph County. In 1801 St. Clair County gained a bit of territory from Knox County. In 1803 the border shifted between St. Clair and Randolph. In 1809, the county became the administrative center of the Illinois Territory. In 1812, St. Clair lost its northern portion to the creation of Madison County. In 1813, it regained eastern land from Randolph. In 1816, a southwestern portion was lost to the creation of Monroe County. In 1818, when Illinois became a state, the eastern part of St. Clair County was lost to the creation of Washington County. Again, in 1825 and 1827, St. Clair lost a bit to Monroe. The boundaries have remained stable since then.

The County Seat is Belleville.
