  • Belleville Public Library (BPL), 121 East Washington, Belleville, IL ph (618) 234-0441. Aside from their own collection of St. Clair and Illinois statehood material, the library is the repository for the collections of the St. Clair County Genealogical Society. Featured records include the East St. Louis Journal Obituary Index 1889–1979, Belleville Newspaper Abstracts 1840–1940, county deed indexes to c1900, St. Clair census on microfilm, family history compilations, county death registers to 1942 and much more.   • Illinois death certificate 1916–c1950 INDEX and online databases to marriages and other St. Clair databases are found on the Illinois State Archives, Margaret Cross Norton Bldg., Capitol Complex, Springfield, IL 62756. Certificates are currently (7/2007) available through 1947. This facility maintains colonial and territorial Kaskaskia, pre-statehood records, and the Perrin Collection. Photocopies may be obtained through the Illinois State Genealogical Society, the IDPH, or the county (see this ISA page for more information and links). For more information see ISGS page.
  • The Illinois Regional Archives Depository, IRAD, Special Collections, Morris Library, Carbondale, IL 62901. Ph (618) 453-3040. Inexpensive documents, including marriage licenses early land and will records, can be obtained from IRAD for less than fees charged at the courthouse. Turn-around time is about 2 to 3 weeks.

  • Office of Vital Records, State Department of Public Health, 605 West Jefferson Street, Springfield, IL 62702. (ph. 217-782-6553 to verify fees.) Maintains statewide registration of births and deaths from 1916 onward (see also the Illinois State Archives and St. Clair County Court House below); a divorce index 1962-forward; marriage index 1962-forward. Certified copies can be obtained if one can show one's relationship; otherwise, non-certified copies will be provided for genealogical purposes.) County clerks may also have birth and death records back to as early as 1878, and St. Clair has Proofs of Births and Deaths back to 1838.
  • St. Clair County Court House, 10 Public Square, Belleville, IL 62220-1698 ph (618) 277-6600. The County Clerk maintains copies of birth from 1878, death (from 1878) and marriage licenses. [Note: The SCCGS, in volume 30 of their Quarterly, began running extracts from the death register 1878 - forward , and marriage index with date by bride from 1906.] Check the courthouse offices for fees.

    The Circuit Clerk has probate records (from 1772). With permission from the Circuit Clerk, C. Barney Metz, the St. Clair County Genealogical Society (SCCGS) is currently (7/2007) procuring duplicate microfilm rolls for deposit in the Belleville Public Library for use by the general public. The indexes are already at the BPL. To contribute to purchase of over 900 microfilm rolls ($20.00 each) for this ongoing project, send contributions in any amount to the SCCGS (address below).

    The Recorder of Deeds has the grantor-grantee index beginning 1986 online. There are no plans to put earlier indexes online since these are available for the earliest years through c1905 at the Belleville Public Library, and through IRAD.

  • St. Clair County Genealogical Society (SCCGS), P.O. Box 431, Belleville, IL 62222-0431. The SCCGS began in 1977. Since that time church registers and tombstone readings have been published in books and in their Quarterly. Databases and indexes to a variety of material are on their web site.

  • Inquire about their memberships, preservation programs, Gingerbread Walk, and newest venture, the renovation and preservation of the Gustave Koerner House and efforts to raise funds for this project. See also Belleville 1814–1914, a 120 page book describing Belleville's first hundred years in photographs with descriptive comments to tell the story of Belleville's founding, German immigration, development as an industrial power in southern Illinois and centennial celebration in 1914. Limited research performed, inquire on their site.

  • The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, formerly the Illinois State Historical Library, now located at 112 North Sixth Street, Springfield, IL 62701-1507; Telephone: (217) 558-8844. Fax: (217) 785-6250, also maintains material on colonial and territorial Kaskaskia, a statewide newspaper collection on microfilm available on interlibrary loan, and much more. Use the ALPL Library Catalog on their old home page which includes manuscripts.
  • The Illinois State Library, 300 South Second Street, Springfield, IL 62701 is the lending arm of the Illinois State Archives. The ISL maintains the largest map collection in the state, much of which may be ordered interlibrary loan.
  • The National Archives of Canada and the provincial archives of Quebec maintain material on 18th century Kaskaskia. The following is a link to general Canadian Genealogy and History.
